Junior Historian Camps
We're excited you are interested in our Junior Historian Camps at the William Root House! We'd love for your child to join us as we embark on a journey back to the 19th century! Junior Historian Camps are $50 per child per camp. Members of Cobb Landmarks can receive a 20% discount with a discount code that will be sent via email. Childhood in the Nineteenth Century
June 7-8, 2022 1:00pm-4:00pm
Our Junior Historians will learn what life was like for children in the 19th century when the Root family lived in Marietta. They’ll get to try on period clothing, pose for an old-style photograph, play popular 19th century games, and even learn to write with ink. They’ll learn essential 19th century skills like how to sew a button, churn butter, and drink their tea with the best of manners.
Designed for students ages 7-10.

History Investigators

Junior Historians will learn how to uncover the secrets of the past and preserve them for the future. They’ll participate in an archaeological dig, investigate “ghost marks” in the Root House, and learn the difference between primary and secondary sources. We’ll conclude with a short walking tour of some of Marietta’s important historical landmarks located near the Root House.
Designed for students ages 11-14.

How Does Your Garden Grow?
July 14-15, 2022 9:00am-12:00pm
Junior Historians will learn all about plants while spending time in the Root House’s historic gardens. They’ll learn to tell the difference between ornamental, medicinal, and edible plants, and learn how to care for plants from our Master Gardeners. They’ll also learn all about the language of flowers and make a bouquet to take home. Junior Historians will spend the majority of the day outdoors during this program, so please be sure to wear sunscreen and/or hats.

Experience what life was like for the residents of Marietta during the Civil War. Junior Historians will make hard tack, learn about how to pass muster in their military regiment, and visit the graves of Civil War soldiers. Junior Historians will also map the movements of the Root family during the Civil War, respond to Root family letters from our archives, and shop at Mr. Root’s store during the height of Civil War inflation.
